In May 2018 government launched a call for evidence into the use of red diesel for non-road mobile machinery, to understand how and why it is used and to identify the barriers to switching to cleaner alternatives. Red diesel for agricultural use, fishing vessels, home heating and static generators is outside the scope of this call for evidence. Motive power for freight and passenger trains, rail terminals and the use of red diesel in refrigeration units in trucks was included.

In April 2019 a summary of the responses to the call for evidence was published, whilst no specific policy proposals are being set at this stage, the government will continue to pursue policies to reduce the overall environmental impact of diesel use and encourage the uptake of alternatives in industries where a practical substitute for diesel engines is available.
